The South Korean society is rapidly changing into a multicultural society, whether it is ready or not. This book documents the whirlpool of social changes in South Korea that was brought about by over one million long-term foreign residents including foreign workers and marriage immigrants since the summer of 2007. The book explores the changing racial and ethnic makeup of South Korea and how the South Koreans are responding to these sudden and profound changes. Based on first-hand research including interviews, surveys and ethnographic research, the authors explore the burgeoning foreign villages in and around Seoul, the mushrooming of multicultural service centers in cities and rural areas, the lives of marriage immigrants, and the attitude of South Koreans, who make up 98% of the South Korean society, toward foreigners. This is the first book in English that explores the fascinating and dynamic changes that are transforming this once hermit, and mono-ethnic Kingdom in Asia.
