이 책은 한국해양수산개발원 독도해양영토연구 센터가 주관하고 도쿄대학 현대송 교수가 편집을 맡은《한국과 일본의 역사인식: 독도, 야스쿠니, 위안부, 교과서 문제의 근원과 쟁점(나남, 2008)의 영문판이다. 이 책은 한일 관계를 이야기할 때 과거사의 뜨거운 쟁점들을 객관적으로 접근하며 합리적 해결과 그 적실한 방안에 대해 모색한다.

이 책에는 두 가지의 지향점이 있다. 먼저, 각자의 입장에 따른 일방적인 비판보다는 치밀한 학문적 연구 성과를 토대로 쌍방 간의 대화에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 또 하나의 중요한 지향점은 한일 양국의 사이에서 이해의 간극을 넓히려는 것이 아니라 대화를 통해 오랜 상처를 치유를 하려는 데 있다.

이 책은 크게 4부로 구성된다. 1부는 독도 문제를 2부는 야스쿠니 신사, 일본군 위안부(성노예) 문제와 교과서 문제의 쟁점을 다루고 3부는 해방 후 한일 갈등의 기원과 그 변천을 4부는 갈등의 극복과 그 해결 방안을 담았다. 기획 취지에 맞게 쟁점별로 한일 양측 전문가들의 연구 결과와 객관적 견해를 나란히 실어 근본적인 문제의 원인을 살피고 한일 양국이 앞으로 나아갈 길을 제시한다.
